CSSC talk
I'm setting up this blog on November 23, 2009, as a site for people in or connected to the Southern Studies program at the University of Mississippi to discuss the issue of university symbols, especially the ongoing controversy over the chant "The South Will Rise Again," the song "From Dixie With Love," and the recent visit by the Ku Klux Klan in support of both and the much larger counterprotests against the Klan visit. This blog site can also be a setting for broader discussion of U of MS symbols and other issues. And of course, people using the site can take it wherever they like.
I have ideas, and I'll share them soon. But I want this blog as a forum for people in our program, students, alumni, staff, faculty, past present and maybe future friends to define and discuss the issues. If we come up with new and constructive ideas, great. If we use it to say things we're wanting to say but worried that no one will listen, that's great too. And if we use the site to discuss how the intellectual issues in Southern Studies courses and scholarship intersect with concerns about the university community, that might be especially good. But I hope friends of Southern Studies will feel free to use this site as you like.
